Under Enemy Colors by S. Thomas Russell

under_enemy_colors_160x252From AudioFile Magazine:
UNDER ENEMY COLORS is a triumph. Set aboard a frigate at sea off the coast of France at the height of British naval power, this gripping novel combines a simple war story with a tale of infuriating office politics, cowardly leadership, and one man’s struggle to remain loyal to his king, an inept commander, and a seething crew. Simon Vance could well earn another Audie nomination with this superb reading. He expertly navigates a complicated story with many characters and a great deal of dialogue, set in a formal style of the period. While accents can too often be the downfall of a good audiobook, Vance makes them an asset. He uses an array of voices to allow the listener to follow the fast-paced dialogue effortlessly. This is a terrific story, enjoyably told. J.B.B. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2008

About Simon

Simon is an actor who found his way into audiobook narrating as a side-gig and seems to have made a success of it. With some training as an actor as a child (just a couple of hours a week, but it stuck) and 15 years working inside the BBC (ending up as one of the presenters/newsreaders on BBC Radio 4 in London) he found the ideal combination for an audiobook narrator. Found his way to California two decades ago and never left.

Absolutely superb! I’m only on Disc #8 and am completely enthralled, can’t wait for the finale, although I don’t want it to end. Since I only listen to the book in my car, I am looking for excuses to be on the road. Living in South Africa, I am quite used to English accents but this reading surpasses anything I have heard. Ever.

The characters and voices for them are excellent, so much so, that I’d probably read the book hearing those voices. I am now a huge Simon Vance fan and will find other CDs, too.

Thanks so much for setting my brain on fire with images, emotions and wonder.

It was WONDERFUL! I wholly in agreement with Virginia, I wish Vance could have read the sequels.

I would have loved to have read them too, but I didn’t have the final say… Thanks for showing your appreciation 🙂

I’m working through the titles in my local library that Simon has read, and just finished ‘Under Enemy Colors’! Wow – utterly fantastic! I’m disappointed however that Simon was apparently not tapped to voice #2 &/or #3 in Mr. Russell’s Charles Hayden series. I’m hooked now on the characters and will probably read two & three in the conventional way, but I’m not happy about it…lol!
